Supporting Homosexuality through Trauma and Healing
Being gay is “a natural part of our diversity as a species.”
– Andrea Ganna, lead author and European Laboratory group leader; geneticist at MIT, Harvard, and the University of Helsinki
LGBTQ+ individuals often face unique challenges that can lead to significant trauma. These challenges stem from societal discrimination, prejudice, and systemic inequalities. Many experience rejection from family members due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, resulting in deep emotional wounds, depression, and in some cases, even homelessness. Bullying in schools and workplaces, as well as physical violence, is an all-too-common experience that can lead to long-lasting trauma and mental health struggles. Additionally, the pressures of societal rejection may cause some individuals to internalize negative attitudes toward their identity, leading to feelings of shame and self-doubt.

Working with organisations dedicated to counselling gay individuals using substances has helped me to understand the importance of creating a safe space by ensuring a non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe to share their experiences. Affirming Identity using inclusive language and affirm the client's sexual orientation to foster acceptance. Keeping in mind what Dr Gabor Mate states " Do not ask why the addiction, ask why the pain"

Focusing on underlying issues by exploring triggers and encouraging the development of healthier coping strategies to replace substance use.
